JAPANESE AMERICAN INTERNMENT
History’s unique and tragic episode of the Japanese American internment experience during World War II is rich with information about the dynamics of what it means to be an American. After Japan’s attack at Pearl Harbor in 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which forced over 110,000 persons of Japanese ancestry into internment camps.

ARAB AMERICANS AND MUSLIMS TODAY
In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Arab Americans, Muslims and those who appeared to be of Middle Eastern ancestry were subjected to acts of intolerance and bigotry. The government took actions that many perceived as targeting individuals based on their religion or ethnicity.

WORKSHOP WILL INCLUDE:

• Perceptions about “loyalty” and “patriotism” and what it means to be an American.
• Discussion about the challenges and responsibilities facing Americans today with a
retrospective view of the treatment of citizens over 67 years ago.
• The need to be informed about individual rights and the selective treatment of minorities.
Several times in our nation’s history, political leaders have been faced with balancing constitutional rights with issues of national security. Many factors have influenced these decisions including prejudice, hysteria created by war, skewed information and data, the media, and the judgments made by our political leaders during times of crises. This workshop will examine both the impact of September 11, 2001 on Arab Americans and Muslims and the
experiences of Japanese Americans and their internment during World War II.
